Breed Associations

American Horse Show Association - Organization that governs the show rules for a wide variety of associations. Good support for education of judges. Membership required to show in many breed association shows.

Arabian Horse Registry of America, Inc. - The main registry for purebred Arabian Horses in the United States.

International Arabian Horse Association - The old, official registry for partbred Arabians. Founded to support and promote the purebred Arabian horse, it now needs OUR support. Click and do so if your heart leads you to!

Iowa Arabian Horse Association - One of two Iowa chapters affiliated with the International Arabian Horse Association. Members enjoy free stallion listings, free classified ads, a newsletter, high point awards program, stallion service auction, a full show season, and a yearly booklet.

The Pinto Horse Association of America, Inc. The association to register Pintos in, especially if your horse IS NOT of quarter horse bloodlines. It does a good job of recognizing four distinct body types and bloodline styles within the Pinto coloration and provides shows, awards, and support for all four equally.

Pinto is also the correct color term for horses of the two-tone coat persuasion that are NOT appaloosas.

BUY/SELL linkS

Arabian Horse America - Relatively new web site for auctions of purebred Arabian horses, free classified ads, stallions at stud, links to other important or noteworthy sites. Dedicated to promoting the purebred Arabian. IAHA related site. It seems responsive to input from its users.

Here's their promo material:

Arabian horse marketplace includes Arabians for sale, stallions at stud, a farm directory, horses wanted, breed history, pictures, books, links and more. Breeding, show, endurance, dressage, horseback riding, horse farm.

Book Stall: sells new and vintage books about Arabian horses.

Search Horses - cyberhorse.com: Horse locator for buyers.

The Horse Group: Horses for sale, photos, videos, free text classifieds, news and articles on training, breeding, health, the industry, 4H, Grand Prix training and competition, events and more. Horse Showcase contains horses worth bragging about.

Breeds include Akhal-Teke, American Saddlebred, Andalusian, Appaloosa, Arabian, Azteca, Belgian, Burro, Clydesdale, draft, Donkey, Fjord, Fox Trotter, Friesan, Hanoverian, Holsteiner, Lippizan, Morab, Morgan, mule, National Show Horse, Oldenburg, Paint, Paso Fino, Percheron, Peruvian Pasos, ponies, Pinto, POA, Quarter Horse, Rocky Mountain, Shire, Standardbred, Tennessee Walker, Thoroughbred, Trakehner, and Warmblood.

Excite Classifieds Pets and Animals: Another free site with a LOT of traffic. Mostly low dollar items get attention, but some mid-range action has come from this site, and it looks as if another set of horses is going from ads placed there.

The photos placed there come out GREAT and can be of decent size. They let you post for up to 12 weeks at a time, and send email reminders midway and at renewal time. You can edit your material, change the photo, etc. any time you desire if you kept the ad number they email you after your ad is placed.

I always inquire what kind of facilities the respondents have to keep a horse, what they want their new horse to be able to do, and try to get a feel for how knowledgeable they are in general. As with any free site, you have to vet out the kids pretty carefully. I get phone and address, as well, and send a pedigree, photo, or video and the contract via snail mail to be sure it all checks out.

Nationwide Equine Auction: Horse, Livestock and Tack Auction. Bid or sell your equestrian items. Free Consignments!

The Western Web: The largest western lifestyle search engine in the world: horses, trailers, auction, dogs, cattle, classified, associations, and everything western.

Western Web free classified ads.

And one of the best-known free sites, Yahoo classifieds. It is pretty hard for less well-known sites to compete with the sheer volume of clicks a site like Yahoo draws. I list under Pets & Animals, with a photo, and have always gotten a response. (Some of them were decidedly weird, like the spam from Africa that wanted me to launder money for them...) But it also provided the lead that resulted in two horses going to Alabama.

Low ticket items do better here, it seems. You have to remember to renew the ad every month. No mailings remind you like on the Excite site. They do, however, save your copy, and reinstating the ad is simple.

A caution. Check back in a day or two to see how your photo looks. They tend to distort the shapes for some reason, so you have to match the pixel size they allow, but I have not discovered where the specs for that shape are listed.

GOOD GENETICS SITES

Equine Color Genetics: Guest Article by Alien Horse

The information is solid, the presentation droll, and the overall effect is enjoyable.

Horse Genetics, a web page maintained by the University of California's School of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Genetics Lab.

As one might well expect, the going on this site is a bit tougher, but worth the wade. The topics include gene mapping, coat color, cytogenetics, genetic disorders and diagnostic tests (with a good selection of articles on current facts about hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP), and horse parentage testing, covering both DNA testing and blood typing.

The links to other references are also well done.

A lot more specific in scope is the Palomino, Buckskin, Cream information by J. Sharon Batteate, complete with multitudinous photos. If you ever wondered about the paler shades, this is your site. Although purebred Arabians do not CARRY THE GENES described here, some claim that their stock is one of these colors...

And, of course, partbreds can and do come in these shades, complete with the expected genes.

Rachael Campbell writes, "I bought the most wonderful book about a year ago Breeding For Color, written by Ed North.

"Here is the inside blurb:

12.5 % Dark Red Dun Tovero,

ON HAULING

Frequently, I get asked about how to haul horses safely across the country. Who do you recommend? How do you know what kind of care they are giving, what shape their equipment is in NOW? This column is an attempt to answer those concerns.

The best rig to hit here recently came to pick up Pandemoniums Revival for the Brewers in MT.

I recently emailed Nick'e, "Who did you haul with?

"I can't believe the number of times I have asked you that question! I need to get it up on my A/PMN web page so I can quit pestering you and FIND it again!", so I am finally getting around to actually DOING it. (Aren't snow days WONDERFUL?)

"It's Horse Haven. You can find them in the Arabian magazines or on line. They are out of Idaho.

NO PROBLEM."

Nick'e

Another good tip came from an Arabian chat. Susie Mc wrote, "Re: shipping question

"I think the mileage charge differs with each company. I use Susan Rodgers at Rodger Transport. They have done me the best job at the lowest prices of any I have talked to."

When I contacted them for some potential customers of mine, she was very prompt and gave a good quote, which may encourage the people to buy, as the shipping was what seemed to be holding up the deal. Rodgers Horse Transport (706) 743-5641.

"I recommend you contact Horse Heaven for a quote on hauling."

I don't know who recommended it. Angela Shaffer had posted two of her horses on an auction, and one of the other people, in a blind post, had listed this hauling link.
