First Cub Scout Pack in U.S.A. in 1925
A summary piece written for the Lamoni Chronicle in February, 1999, in celebration of 75 years for Lamoni Boy Scout Troop 116. It briefly summarizes a much earlier history for Boy Scouting in Lamoni and, of particular note, indentifies Lamoni as the birthplace for cub scouting in the U.S. http://www.grm.net/~pkmagle/scouting/history99.html

1911-1973 History of Scouting in Lamoni, Iowa
Historical piece written in 1973 that includes a wealth of well researched information, including names of scouts and leaders on the early rosters. Lamoni's Boy Scout history begins in 1911, one year after it was organized in England. Lamoni's Cub Scout history begins in 1925, well before the B.S.A. chartered such groups. http://www.grm.net/~pkmagle/scouting/history.html

George Mesley's Own Remarks
In 1924, George Mesley came to the U.S. to attend Graceland College and, with Lord Baden-Powell's blessing, was intent on extending the wolf [cub] scout movement here. This is his story written in his own words about the events resulting in the formation of the first cub scout pack in the U.S.A. http://www.grm.net/~pkmagle/scouting/Mesley.html

Photos of George Mesley
Several photos (taken in 1989 and 1993) of the late George Mesley. He is wearing his Wood Badge which Lord Baden-Powell himself placed around Mesley's neck, on which are two of the original beads from the outfit of the Zulu Chieftain captured by Baden-Powell in the Boer War. In another photo, Mesley is holding his original Gilwell neckerchief which he received at Gilwell, where he did his Wood Badge training under Baden-Powell's leadership. Eventually, I hope to include earlier photos of George Mesley with his Lamoni scouts. http://www.grm.net/~pkmagle/scouting/MesleyPics.html

History of RLDS Religious Life Awards for Boy Scouts
Early pioneering efforts by Dr. Floyd M. McDowell lead to the development of the God and Country Program for scouts of the RLDS Church back in 1945. There may have been some degree of networking with other denominations who wanted to create their own programs (back in the late 60's I heard someone say it was used as a model program for some other denominations). In the late 70's, the RLDS Church replaced its God and Country program with a three-part World Community Award program. This web page summarizes some of this history, including some of my own observations and viewpoints. http://www.grm.net/~pkmagle/scouting/GodandCountry.html

History of Scouting for the Handicapped
Having a Down's Syndrome brother in a scouting family with four other Eagle Scout sons, resulted in my parents being deeply involved with physically and mentally challenged scouts and special programs for them. As the eldest son, I got a chance to observe some of this history myself and this web page lays out some of that history, from my perspective. http://www.grm.net/~pkmagle/scouting/challenged.html
