DECATUR COUNTY IS CATTLE COUNTRY!

Although Interstate 35 has brought many new industries to Decatur County, it is first and foremost "THE HEART OF CATTLE COUNTRY". Every spring the rolling hills of Decatur County gives birth to a new crop of baby calves running through the pastures with their tails held high, the grass turns green and the local farmers start to prepare for another year. These local farmers form the backbone of Decatur County.

Decatur County is the home of several large cattle feeding operations and has a very strong Cattleman's Association, which participates in many community projects through out the year. The Lamoni Livestock Sales Co. Inc. (641-784-3323) has some of the largest livestock sales in the state of Iowa with buyers and sellers coming from Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri not to mention the local farmers. The rolling hills have also created some very fertile bottom ground, which produces an abundance of corn and beans supporting three grain elevators. The local farmers are supported by the Decatur County Soil Conservation Service (641-446-4135), ISU Extension Service (641-446-4723), A.S.C. Office (641-446-4158), Decatur County Farm Bureau Organization (641-446-6412) and many farm related businesses.
