Grand River Mutual sets forth this Acceptable Use Policy with the intent of protecting our service, our customers, and other users of the Internet from potentially abusive actions taken by Grand River Mutual customers. The following policy is not all inclusive; and in the event a customer has any questions regarding use, he or she should contact Grand River Mutual for answers to his or her questions. Grand River Mutual reserves the right to alter this policy from time to time as needed.
Suspension/Termination Policy for Unlawful Use
Users who repeatedly or flagrantly abuse their access to the Internet through disrespect for the intellectual property rights of others, or users who violate Grand River Mutual’s Acceptable Use Policy in other respects, are subject to having their account suspended, temporarily or permanently, without refund in Grand River Mutual’s sole discretion.

Statement of Responsibility
Providing Internet Service to Others
Customers of Grand River Mutual Internet service are strictly prohibited from reselling any Grand River Mutual Internet service, except with the prior written consent of Grand River Mutual.
Customers of Grand River Mutual Internet service are strictly prohibited from providing Grand River Mutual Internet service free of charge to any other person or entity except (a) to a person who resides in customer's household (b) is a temporary guest in customer's household or (c) to a person or entity making use of the Internet service while temporarily on the customer's business premises.
Acceptable Use: Network
Acceptable use of the Grand River Mutual network facilities does NOT include:

Attempting to circumvent user authentication or security of any host, network, or account on Grand River Mutual systems or the Internet at large ("cracking, hacking"). This includes scanning or probing ports without the consent of the owner of the machine being scanned.

Use of Grand River Mutual systems or networks (willfully or negligently) in a manner that encumbers disk space, processors, bandwidth, or other system resources so as to interfere with others' normal use of services on Grand River Mutual or other systems and networks. This includes, but is not limited to "denial of service" attacks, systems set up as servers or gaming services.

Distribution of pornographic or otherwise indecent or offending materials.

Distribution or use of restricted software or materials in violation of copyright or distribution licenses.

Listing, linking, or posting of any material that violates copyright laws.

Other activities that violate local, state, or federal statutes.
Acceptable Use: Shell/Telnet Access
Acceptable use of shell/telnet access does NOT include:

Unauthorized access

Running background processes after you have logged out.

Compiling and running foreign binaries without express written consent of Grand River Mutual.

Acceptable Use: Domain Names
Grand River Mutual provides domain name service for Dedicated Connection, Advanced Web Services, and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) / FastTrack customers. Keeping registry information updated and accurate is the responsibility of the domain holder and not Grand River Mutual. Acceptable use of the Grand River Mutual domain name service does NOT include:

Falsifying or omitting valid domain contact information, including the administrative, technical, zone, and billing contacts.
Acceptable Use: Email
Acceptable use of Email does NOT include:

Sending unsolicited mass mailings of any nature, including those with a "negative option" for continuation. The negative option is inviting those who do not wish to receive more email to reply to you.

Sending a large number of email messages, or singularly large email messages, to a single address in order to flood someone's mailbox.

Forging email headers to obscure the true originator of the message.

Creating or participation in pyramid schemes or chain letters.

Sending harassing email, either by language, size or frequency. This includes sending email (or real time) messages to a person who has asked explicitly that you do not.

Activities that violate local, state, or federal statutes.

Storing of email for longer than 30 days on Grand River Internet servers. Email dated 30 days old or older may be deleted by Grand River Internet.
Acceptable Use: Dial-up Access
Acceptable use of Grand River Mutual Dial-up access does NOT include:

Multiple simultaneous logins to a single Grand River Mutual dial-up account are prohibited.

Dial-up connections to Grand River Mutual that are idle for 20 minutes or longer, or connected for more than 24 hours continuously, will be disconnected. Idle time is defined as a period during which no input or output is sent or received across the modem connection.

While our service is unlimited, it is not a dedicated modem connection. Use of Grand River Mutual dial-up service as a dedicated modem connection through use of redialers and idle-time traffic generators is prohibited.

Activities that violate local, state, or federal statutes.
Acceptable Use: Web/FTP Sites
Acceptable use of Grand River Mutual web/FTP space does NOT include:

Distribution of pornographic or otherwise indecent or offending materials.

Distribution of restricted software or materials in violation of copyrights or distribution licenses.

Distribution of materials that violates local, state, or federal statutes.
Grand River Mutual reserves the right to suspend, restrict, or terminate service without refund in the event of an Acceptable Use Policy violation in its sole discretion. Grand River Mutual also reserves the right to take action on abuse or violation of its Acceptable Use Policy, including suspension and/or termination, that is not specifically named in this Acceptable Use Policy at the sole discretion of Grand River Mutual. Use of the Grand River Mutual systems and network constitutes understanding and agreement of this policy. |
